The Different Types of Fire Damage!

8/24/2022 (Permalink)

Dealing with the damage from a fire can be a long process.  The fire could have been small, but the smoke from it did the majority of the damage.  On the other side, most of the damage could have been from the fire itself.  Lastly, there could have been another layer of damage caused when the fire was extinguished.  Here are the main types of fire damage that are commonly dealt with.

Flame Damage - This could be from an electrical outlet that caused damage, all the way to a full-blown kitchen fire.

Smoke Damage - Smoke is literally in the air and can (and will) get into everything.  Even after the rebuild is completed, there can still be a lingering smell of smoke to the property unless it is dealt with correctly.

3rd Party Damage - This type of damage comes from any in-house sprinkler system used to put the fire out or from the Fire Department themselves when they get to the scene.

Heat Damage - Even though a part of the structure might have not actually caught fire, it was probably severely heated up.  This can cause structural damage and possible swelling that you might not notice right away.

After a fire, you could be dealing with flame, smoke, water and heat damage at the same time.  FEMA has some great information on what to do after the fire.  The best way to make sure that this is taken care of promptly and properly is to contact the team at SERVPRO to get on the job!

Storm Damage Resources!

8/19/2022 (Permalink)

We have all dealt with storm damage in the past, and since we live in an area affected by hurricanes, we will probably deal with them again in the future.  We all know what to do in order to prepare for a hurricane, but what do we do after the storm has passed?  It is just as important to have a post-storm plan, as one before.

Here are a few things to do immediately after the storm has passed and it is safe to do so.

  1. Before you clean up, take pictures and videos of all of the damage, inside and out.
  2. Start removing anything that is wet or holding water, followed by debris from your home.
  3. Have your insurance policy and contact information ready to go so that you can contact them right away.
  4. Start making any repairs that you can in order to stop future damage.

Remember that if a storm does damage to your property, it probably did to many others as well.  Get in touch with your insurance company as quickly as possible to get the claim started.    We all remember events in the past where it took weeks to get someone out to look at the damage.  Having a plan for after the storm can help keep you on a track to getting back to normal as quickly as possible.  The team at SERVPRO of West El Paso is here to help.  Give them a call at (915) 234-2614.

Is Bleach Enough For My Mold Problem?

8/19/2022 (Permalink)

During the height of COVID, we were cleaning and sanitizing everything from door knobs to keyboards.  Anything that was touched by multiple people was getting hit with one kind of cleaner or another.  We should be taking that same approach to getting rid of mold.  Mold has been here much longer than COVID and it isn’t going away anytime soon (maybe an asteroid).  How do we get rid of mold in the home or office?  The CDC says that using bleach to kill mold isn’t always recommended.  Using a bleach/water mixture will most likely destroy the surface mold, but the growth goes much deeper than that.  Bleach cannot penetrate the deeper levels of porous materials, so you will most likely see it come back within a short period of time.

Here are a few things that the EPA says about the basics of mold cleanup.

  1. Moisture control.  If you can keep it dry, you can help control the growth of mold.
  2. Scrub the mold off of hard surfaces with a detergent and water, then dry completely.
  3. Any absorbent materials like carpets, rugs, and ceiling tiles will most likely need to be thrown away.

If you have tried to get rid of mold and can’t seem to keep it away, give your local team at SERVPRO of West El Paso a call at (915)234-2614.  We have the experience, equipment, and products to help destroy the mold and to keep it from returning.

Signs of a Water Damaged Ceiling - SERVPRO of West El Paso

8/10/2022 (Permalink)

A water damaged ceiling can happen a few different ways.  Before you start to repair the ceiling, you need to find out what caused the damage in the first place.  Once you have repaired those underlying issues, you can safely begin the rebuilding process.

Here are a few different ways to tell if you have water damage.

Water stains - This is usually a discolored stain that appears on the ceiling.  No matter how big or small the stain is, it will most likely grow with time and continue to damage the surrounding areas.  This can come from a leaky pipe, roof damage or any kind of leak from a floor above.

Ceiling Bubbles - If you notice bubbles forming beneath the paint on your ceiling or walls, you probably have a leak somewhere.  The water will begin to pool between the sheetrock and the layer of paint on your walls.

Mold - If you can see mold growing on the ceiling, there is a very high chance that water is the cause of it.  This can continue to spread around the ceiling and into the walls.  Mold in your home can cause health problems and should be taken care of immediately.

If you see any of these signs of water damage, don’t hesitate to contact the professionals at SERVPRO West El Paso at (915) 234-2614 to help start the repair process!

Disinfection vs Cleaning

8/2/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of West El Paso offers office disinfection services that are a step above cleaning with household chemicals.  The Center for Disease Control suggests hospital-grade cleaners that are able to kill certain bacteria.  It is extremely important to target the high-touch and high-traffic areas of your business.

The EPA defines the differences between Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfection as follows:

Cleaning - removes dirt and organic matter from surfaces using soap or detergents.

Sanitizing - kills bacteria on surfaces using chemicals.  It is not intended to kill viruses.

Disinfecting - kills viruses and bacteria on surfaces using chemicals.

Some of the most common places that need extra attention at your business are handles, keyboards, public tables, faucets, light switches, phones, desks, and probably everything in the break room.

Feel free to call SERVPRO of El Paso to set up a consultation on helping keep your office environment at its best.

3 Things To Avoid After a Flood

7/18/2022 (Permalink)

How To Handle Flood Damage

When storms send floodwater into your West El Paso home, you don't always know what to do. When is it safe to return to your house? Can you start the cleanup on your own? How you handle a flood will depend on the severity of the damage. It can be helpful to call about storm damage services right after the storm has left your area. You should also try to avoid doing the following:

1. Walking Into Standing Water

Did you know that 6 inches of moving water can cause you to lose your footing? Because even shallow waters can be dangerous, you should avoid walking into any standing water. Your flooded home may be full of stagnant water, but you should still avoid going into it. If the electricity is on, the water could be charged. Stormwater could contain dangerous contaminants, too.

2. Waiting To Schedule a Cleanup

Do you want to try to tackle the water damage on your own? Unless you know how to effectively remove flooding and humidity from your house, you should turn to a professional. The sooner you can schedule your cleanup, the better it will be for your home. If you wait too long, you may have increased mold growth in your space.

3. Returning to Your Home Too Soon

While you want your life to return to normal, you need to make sure the flood water is completely gone before you return. Going home too soon can make it harder for the cleanup crew to properly remove excess humidity. The cleanup may require building materials to be replaced, which can leave your home dusty. If you wait until the entire process is finished, you can return to a more normal life right when you move back in.

Storm flood water may cause you to leave your home until the damage can be fixed. Taking the wrong steps after this type of flood can make the restoration process harder than it has to be, so remember what not to do.

Does Your House Smell Like Campfire After a Fire Loss?

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

When you experience a house fire, the damage can be devastating. Beyond the charred materials from flames is the lingering smell of smoke. Smoke damage can often be one of the most widespread effects to contend within your home after a fire. While there are other concerns to address after a fire that often take precedent for restorations and mitigation, restoring damage to your property should include addressing the smoke to get your home back to normal.

Much of the cleanup and restoration after a fire in your El Paso home focuses on cleaning and smoke odor removal. Indoor air quality is also a primary focus for our SERVPRO® professionals once the first responders have left. We work quickly to establish our purification equipment such as air scrubbers and hydroxyl generators to run the available air through HEPA filters overtime to begin pulling smoke particles and soot from the environment and reducing hazards or risks of exposure without respirators.

How we address smoke damage

Smoke damage often depends on the type of smoke that impacted your home during the fire. Dry smoke results from high heat but is also a residue that is much easier for technicians to clean with dry and wet sponges on the coated surfaces. Wet smoke leaves a thick residue on surfaces and contents, which often requires specialized equipment to clean and deodorize fully. This kind of smoke damage is definitely best left to the experts! The heat generated by a fire impacts the actual penetration of soot particles into porous materials like drywall and fabrics.

Getting rid of the lingering smell of smoke

Improving the odors in your home after a fire is also a concern for our team, but these steps often follow reconstruction and other restoration efforts. Waiting for deodorization allows our technicians to leave your home completely cleaned and odor-free. Our thermal foggers can often do the greatest amount of deodorization, as these machines are suitable to use in open areas, fabrics, soft materials, and work to remove odors from surfaces as well.

If you experience a fire, our team can arrive quickly to help lessen the damage and prolonged impact of a fire emergency, and work to eliminate the presence of smoke damage. Give us a call!

2022's Hurricane Survival Guide

6/3/2022 (Permalink)

Get ready, Texas, hurricane season officially starts June 1 and runs through November 30.

According to the NOAA, we will be looking at another above-average season. Whether you are a long-time resident of Louisiana or a brand new transplant it is always important to be reminded of the impacts of hurricanes and how you can prepare.

Before the storm If you were here for last year's storm there's a good chance you already have a hurricane kit. If not, start gathering your supplies! Ensure that each person (pets included) has nonperishable food and water for at least seven days. Your kit should also include flashlights, a radio, cash, a first-aid kit, and medicine at a minimum. Due to large shortages at this point in time it is imperative you do not wait until the last minute to gather these supplies.

You should also consider inspecting your shutters, roof, and fences in case repairs or replacements are needed and check that your policies are current and if you have sufficient coverage for hurricanes with your homeowner's insurance. Due to the constant construction in our area, it is also important to check for updated hurricane evacuation routes.

While the storm is coming fuel up your car, charge your power banks, withdraw cash, and buy supplies you still need. Start prepping your home by bringing your patio furniture, pets, and potted plants inside. Tie-down anything that could become airborne and if you have a boat, secure it properly. Start monitoring the local news for updates from the National Hurricane Center, your local National Weather Service office, and local officials on the storm’s track, what type of hazards to expect, and if there are any evacuation orders in effect. Get sandbags, find a safe place to park your car, put your shutters up, and don’t leave trash on the curb. If you don’t have shutters or hurricane-proof windows, board up your windows with 5/8-inch plywood.

During the storm and after Stay away from windows and doors and don't leave the house. As tempting as it is to watch mother nature do her thing, do not go outside. Once officials have said it is safe to do so, report property damage and power outages.  Monitor for curfew and boil-water-order notices. If you want to use a generator, make sure to keep it at least 20 feet from a home, including your neighbors, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. If you plan to go out be careful on the roads since there might be downed trees, fallen power lines, traffic lights that aren’t working, and debris. Some roads might also be flooded. Reminder, do not drive or walk through standing water.

If your home or business experiences water, wind, fire, or mold damage, give the professionals a call. We are your storm damage experts!

Hidden Waer Damage is a Major Problem

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

Even small water damages in your El Paso home have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time.

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a serious problem that will affect your property. Our SERVPRO of West El Paso service technicians have the training and equipment to find and dry unseen water before secondary damage occurs. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage and expense during a fire or water damage event.

When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to work, here are just a few of the tools our technicians use to do their job and restore your property.

Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards, and walls.

Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate reading, allowing technicians to monitor the drying process.

Thermo hygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, technicians can calculate and create an environment most conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but also to disinfect and deodorize.

Ultra Low-Volume Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.

Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor-causing particles.

These are just a few pieces of professional-grade equipment that each SERVPRO of West El Paso technician is trained to use to help ensure your property is completely restored.

Dealing With a Grease Fire in El Paso

4/18/2022 (Permalink)

No one plans to have a grease fire in the kitchen, but it can happen in an instant and you should always be prepared. If a fire breaks out on the stove in your home in El Paso, TX here are some steps to help minimize the damage.

1. Contain the Flames.

A metal lid or cookie sheet is a great tool for suffocating a fire. Covering the fire with cut-off oxygen that is fueling the fire.

2. Turn off Heat.

The faster you can get the burner cool, the better. If you can safely get to the knob on the stove to turn it off, do it!

3. Smother the Fire.

If the fire is small, use baking soda or salt to put out the flames. If you take one thing from this, you should NEVER pour water onto a grease fire, it will make it worse!

4. Recognize Limits.

If the fire is still going strong after the first three steps, call emergency services as you start your emergency exit plan.

5. Repair Damage.

No matter how small the fire is, it likely left some damage behind. Fire restoration specialists can assess the damage and restore your kitchen and any affected surrounding area to be like new again. Let them take the lead on the fire cleanup.

Mold Maintenance Standards - SERVPRO of West El Paso

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

Mold spores are a natural occurrence present just about everywhere — including your El Paso, TX business. When exposed to moisture these microscopic particles can quickly grow into a large threat, leaving your business at risk for many issues. Federal organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration do not set any mold standards, but that doesn’t mean mold cleanup isn’t an aggressive process. Here are three steps to keep in mind when dealing with mold.

1. Water Damage

Mold spores become an issue when exposed to moisture and allowed to grow into colonies. Regularly check for any threat of water damage in your business, including leaking pipes or drafty windows. Furthermore, maintain appropriate levels of humidity within the building to limit moisture levels in the air.

2. Check Building Materials

To alleviate the uncertainty of mold standards, ensure building standards are up to code. Proper insulation installed around windows, piping, and exterior walls minimize a buildup of condensation, keeping mold at bay. Verify that your business is well-ventilated and regularly check porous materials such as drywall, ceiling tiles, and wood for any signs of mold damage.

3. Contact Us!

Time is of the essence when it comes to mold infestation; an IICRC certified company will have the training and professional equipment to safely and effectively mediate the mold damage in your business in a time-sensitive manner.

Your Generator Maintenance Guide | SERVPRO of West El Paso

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

With the crazy weather patterns in El Paso the past year, it is important to be prepared in the event of another disaster. We recommend having a generator handy in the event the storm impacts last days on end. In order to ensure your generator is functioning properly take these maintenance tips into consideration.

The typical life expectancy for a generator is between 20,000 and 30,000 hours, serving a crucial role while waiting for a storm restoration company to come to your business.

Weekly
You are going to need to perform small maintenance tasks every week. These include:

  • Running the engine
  • Checking for alarms or warnings
  • Ensuring adequate fuel levels for an emergency
  • Setting the engine to auto mode
  • Checking that the circuit breaker is closed
  • Ensuring there are no leaks

Monthly
On a monthly basis, you will need to spend more time checking fluid levels, such as the coolant and oil. You should also check the battery to ensure you are ready for a disaster.

Bi-Annual
You are going to want to check the thermal protection levels every six months. At the same time, inspect the drive belts to ensure they have the proper tension and are in good condition.

Annual
A certified technician will need to come out every year and perform crucial tasks, such as changing the engine oil, fuel filter, air filter, and spark plugs. If any extra maintenance is needed, like a coolant system flush, your technician will perform these items at your annual service.

Taking precautions like this can have many benefits for your home or business. The primary one is that you put off replacing your equipment longer. If you are looking to push the maximum number of hours and avoid generator problems, you need to consider required preventative maintenance.

How To Make Commercial Carpets Last Longer

11/8/2021 (Permalink)

Although most commercial carpets are made for durability, dirt and debris will still build up over time in them because of all the foot-traffic. Maintaining regular cleaning will be beneficial to your carpet because once a carpet gets too soiled, it may never be restored to its original appearance.

Preventative maintenance actions include:

  • Regular vacuuming
  • Spot removal
  • Pilating the carpet to prevent matting
  • Moving furniture to change traffic patterns
  • Using walk-off mats to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet

Even when you follow preventive maintenance actions, carpets will still have dirt trapped below the surface that you cannot see with the eye, especially in dark carpets. Carpets act as a filter trapping gasses, hair, dirt, and dust. Did you know that 79% of soil in carpets is dry soil? To reduce that percentage, you should get your company's carpet professionally cleaned once a year. Protect your company's investment by having it cleaned by SERVPRO of West El Paso!

Because each carpet is different, we offer a number of options to keep your carpet and upholstery brand new. Our cleaning methods include:

  • Bonnet Cleaning: A less aggressive method for short piled carpets.
  • Hot Water Extraction: A deeper cleaning method for all carpet types.
  • Deluxe Precondition and Rinse: Helps restore deeply soiled areas.
  • Showcase Premier Cleaning: The most thorough cleaning method in the industry.
  • Dry Cleaning: When color-fastness is an issue.

For a cleaning from SERVPRO® of West El Paso that is backed by state-of-the-art equipment and technicians trained to the highest standards, call us today to schedule an appointment.

Defective Sink Plumbing Could Mean Water Damage to Your El Paso Home

11/8/2021 (Permalink)

Sinks are a vital part of any functioning kitchen in a West El Paso home. While you might go to great lengths to ensure that you are taking care of all the pieces and parts that bring water into your faucets or carry the wastewater back out again, often, it is not enough. When any of these components malfunction, the result could be a damaging amount of water headed through your kitchen very quickly.

This kind of water damage to your West El Paso home is unpredictable in many ways. Since there are so many pieces that make up a sink in your kitchen, it can be difficult amid an emergency to identify the source of the problem. Knowing where the problem started gets exponentially more difficult if you have multiple basins for your kitchen sink design. While you are going to get wet, you can do a few things to ensure that the problem does not spread or get worse in the affected area.

Water Removal Services

You must act quickly to get the water shut off, you have to get yourself underneath the sink and get a look at the piping. Quickly scan the entire assembly for any noticeable fractures or separations, but that is not why you are down there. What you are searching for is a valve that feeds up from the floor into the cabinetry that supplies the faucet with water.

On this pipe, you should notice a valve. It usually has a yellow handle and can be turned 90 degrees to cut the water supply to the sink. After a few moments from turning this valve, you should notice the water slowing and then stop altogether.

Sometimes there is little to no warning of an impending break to your plumbing for your sink, but its proximity to all your major appliances requires you to move quickly to remove the water and restore any damages. Our SERVPRO of West El Paso team is equipped with the tools and experience to help you through all phases of this crisis until the problem gets fixed. Give us a call anytime at (915) 234-2614.

Fire Safety Means Accident Prevention | SERVPRO of West El Paso

11/3/2021 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association

  • More than one-quarter (26%) of reported fires in 2015-2019 occurred in homes.
  • During this five-year period, US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 346,800 home structure fires per year.
  • Most home fires and fire casualties result from five causes: cooking, heating, electrical distribution and lighting equipment, intentional fire setting, and smoking materials.

With that being said, fortunately, there are things you can do to protect your home, and your loved ones, from the danger of fire. It’s important to educate everyone in the home about fire safety.

Here are some tips to keep everyone in your home safe:

1. Educate Children

Always keep matches, lighters and flammable objects away from children and teach them about the dangers of “playing” with such items. Talking about fire safety is crucial to prevention.

2. Check Your HVAC

Any type of heating within the home needs to be checked regularly, whether it’s a gas-fueled furnace or a kerosene heater. Fireplaces should be cleaned often, including the chimney. Electric floor heaters should have cords in perfect condition and should be kept away from curtains and thick carpeting. Never leave a kerosene heater or gas lamp going during the night.

3. Outlets

Don’t neglect electrical outlets or allow them to become overloaded. If your home is older than ten years, it’s a good idea to have the electric wiring checked by a professional. Never place cords or surge protectors under rugs or furniture.

4. Smoke Alarms

Check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors every six months to ensure the batteries are in good working order. Make sure there is an alarm in every bedroom and in the kitchen and any garage space, along with fire extinguishers.

5. Cooking

Never leave stovetop items unattended, especially if you have a gas range with an open flame. Turn the handles of pots and pans away from the walkway so that they can’t be accidentally knocked off the stove. Keep the stove clean at all times and de-grease often.

6. Plan Accordingly

It’s crucial to have a plan on what to do in case of emergency and share it with your family, making sure everyone knows the safest way to escape in the event of a fire, where to meet if the family is separated, and who to call.

Remember, even small fires can leave large messes behind. If you are dealing with smoke, fire, or soot damage, call the professionals at SERVPRO of West El Paso!

How Fire Damage Can Cause Water Damage | SERVPRO of West El Paso

11/2/2021 (Permalink)

When a fire occurs, many are concerned with the potential of catastrophic fire damage. But did you know that water damage can occur as a result of fire damage?

  • Fire damages the integrity of a building's electrical system, resulting in leaks or ruptured pipes.
  • A fire will remove most or all insulation from walls which in turn causes condensation on interior surfaces like windows and ceilings. Condensation on windows and ceilings may drip down onto furniture and floors.
  • Firefighting efforts can cause water damage to a structure during the firefighting process. Even if fire sprinkler systems are working correctly, they are designed to extinguish a fire - not to prevent water from entering your home.

At SERVPRO of West El Paso, we work diligently to help prevent water damage and to respond quickly when it occurs. We offer premier water damage fire cleanup and fire restoration services in the region. Contact SERVPRO of West El Paso today to learn more. Servicing all of West El Paso!

Do You Have a Funky Smell In Your Home After a Storm?

10/25/2021 (Permalink)

The water damage from a natural disaster in your home often comes with odors and mold growth that can be hard to find. If you suspect you have mold but don't see any growth, we recommend finding an industrial hygienist who can find out what mold may or may not be in your home. Other measures you can take to help with the funk are below:

Air It Out

Open all doors and windows to allow air to circulate in your residence.  This should help dissipate any lingering smells that remain and will also facilitate the drying of the affected areas.

Dry the Wet Areas

You may install dehumidifiers to speed up the drying process.  Removing moisture from porous and absorbent surfaces such as carpet and upholstery can greatly reduce the chance of foul aromas remaining after the flood and can mitigate the appearance of mold.

Deodorize Your Home

There are natural methods that you can utilize to expedite the deodorizing process in your house.  Baking soda sprinkled into carpets or other absorbent surfaces can be vacuumed up, greatly with getting rid of foul odors.  On less porous surfaces, vinegar applied liberally can aid in combating persistent smells.

Keep an Eye Out for Mold

As with any area that has had prolonged exposure to moisture, mold growth can be a threat that, if not addressed immediately can become a huge problem.  It is imperative that proper steps are taken to ensure that mold and spores do not have the opportunity to spread in your home.

Sewage

Sewage loss can lead to your home being contaminated by sewage contents when floodwater finds its way past your threshold.  This can leave behind an overpowering smell even after the moisture has been removed due to the bacteria in the water. These horrendous smells often cannot be removed by household cleaners and require the services of a professional flood restoration company.

Eliminating odors can be a tricky thing, so give us a call at (915) 234-2614 and leave the restoration to us!

3 Most Common Commercial Water Damage Problems

10/24/2021 (Permalink)

No matter what the cause of the water damage in your building is, it is important to address it as soon as possible. Regularly inspecting your business for water damage can save you a lot of time and money down the road. The three most common types of water damage we see in businesses are:

1. Roof Leaks

Leaking roofs are a common source of damage that can cause a lot of damage indoors. In addition to the damage caused directly by water entering your building, the excess moisture can lead to mildew or mold growth, electrical fires and structural damage. To avoid additional damage, it is important to make repairs to your roof and dry out wet areas promptly.

2. Damaged Plumbing

A broken pipe can be caused by deteriorated water supply lines, pressure changes, cold weather and other issues. Because pipes are usually hidden from sight and may not be easily accessible, leaky pipes can be difficult to detect. If you see bulging walls, cracked or loose tiles, water stains on walls or floors, unexplained flooding, or notice a musty smell, these can be signs of a leaky pipe. You may notice unusual increases in water usage or the size of your water bill.

3. Sprinkler System Leaks

Sprinkler systems are an invaluable tool for mitigating fire damage but can develop leaks over time, particularly if they are not maintained regularly. Standing water, wet carpets or walls and mold or mildew growth may be signs of a sprinkler leak. To prevent this problem, have your sprinkler system regularly inspected and maintained.

How to Create an Effective Fire Escape Plan

10/21/2021 (Permalink)

We often think that disasters won't happen to us, even though disasters can happen to anyone! We will neglect planning because we have convinced ourselves we are safe from disaster. If this sounds like you, you are not alone. Ensuring your family has a plan reduces the risk of injury and death. If you need help coming up with a plan, contact your local fire department or fire remediation company.

A fire escape plan is a crucial part of family safety. Follow the steps above to create and practice your ideal plan.

1. Multiple Exits

You never know where a fire will start or how it will spread. If you only have two exits from your home, you up the chances you will become trapped.

An effective escape plan requires a minimum of two exits PER room. You do not have to get overly creative here. A window and a door are good escape routes; just make sure that every space in the home has a minimum of two ways out, including hallways.

2. Escape Routes Must Remain Clear

As you design your escape routes, remember the paths need to remain clear. Do not place bookshelves in front of windows or couches in the direct line to the front door.

3. Communication

When you come up with an escape plan, please do not shy away from talking about it. Quiz your kids on the routes out of their rooms and the house. Ask your spouse to explain to your children how to make quick choices during a fire. By having conversations, even repetitive ones, you ensure your escape strategy remains a priority in the minds of your family.

4. Practice, Practice, Practice!

Similarly, the physical practice is crucial to developing muscle memory. In a genuine emergency, your brain can freeze, wasting the few precious moments you have to escape a fire. By practicing at least once per month, you ensure your family knows how to get out of the house.

Dirty Ducts In Your West El Paso Business?

10/21/2021 (Permalink)

The fact of the matter is your office air is filled with dust, dust mites, animal dander, mold, and other unhealthy elements. Unless you address the situation now, the air quality will continue to deteriorate.

Your local franchise wants to ensure that you, your employees, and customers are breathing healthy air. Unnecessary dirt and debris can pose a serious threat to the health of your employees if they are not properly maintained.

Some things to consider by scheduling a duct cleaning for your business:

Improved Health Poor indoor air quality ranks among the top five environmental risks to your health.

Energy consumption Clean ducts help lower your utility bill and help your HVAC unit last longer.

Smelly air Odors will continue to plague your business long after you remove the offensive item if the odor is in your ducts.

Microbial growth can grow in your duct system especially if your business suffered recent water damage from the hurricane.

For the sake of your customers and employees, you need to know the air you breathe at your business is free from contaminants.

SERVPRO’s licensed technicians can provide all of the remediation and cleaning services. Give us a call today.

What To Expect From an Adjuster After an Insurance Claim Has Been Filed

10/20/2021 (Permalink)

Both commercial and residential water damage can happen from a variety of issues such as a pipe burst, roof issues, and storm surges. Many times water losses are unexpected so it is important to always be aware of what's covered if your insurance policy changes.

Although each insurance is different, you can usually expect a visit from an insurance adjuster after you have filed a claim. The adjuster comes out on behalf of the insurance company to see any damages first hand and make a proper recommendation about claim approval.

During their visit to your home, the insurance adjuster will be looking for several things, including:

  • Evidence of structural damage
  • Cause of the damage
  • Receipts for claimed losses
  • Estimates for repairs
  • Mitigation attempts

To save yourself time, ensure you have the proper documents for when the adjuster arrives. You should put together a loss inventory. This document will include an itemized list of all damaged or destroyed items. If possible, include pictures of all the items along with copies of receipts. Additionally, you should compile a list of any structural damage to your home. The list should identify the specific location and any damage. Finally, you will want to have copies of repair bids. The adjuster will need to see estimates of the damage done to the property. A remediation company can help you gather any necessary information.

Even though a water loss can be a lot to deal with, the insurance company will expect the property owner to have made attempts to mitigate the water damage. Whether that means reaching out to a disaster mitigation company and getting estimates, or patching up a hole in the roof, they want to see you've made an attempt. Be aware that failure to mitigate further loss can result in the denial of your claim.

Remember, the insurer is not your friend; they do not want to give you money, and they especially do not want to give you more than they have to.

It is also important to remember that while an insurance company might have preferred contractors, you do not need to work with them for a claim to be approved. It is important to hire the professional you feel most comfortable with.

Commercial Fire Drill Tips | SERVPRO of West El Paso

10/15/2021 (Permalink)

Most companies require yearly fire drills in order to ensure safety and follow fire department guidelines. Many employees and managers dislike fire drills due to the interruption during the day. However, these drills could save lives at some point.

Here are some tips to follow to help with fire drill seriousness.

Always take them seriously. Leading by example is a great way to get employees on board. Also having drills without warning will allow for employees to take them more seriously.

Prepare your team ahead of time. Before there ever is an actual drill, make sure employees know what the fire plan is. Especially if you work in a high-rise building, making sure employees know where exits and emergency stairwells are is important.

For employees that could be dealing with customers during a fire drill, provide them with a few bullet points they can use during their conversation. For example, due to a local emergency, the call must be disconnected and we will return your call once we are back.

If your business experiences a fire, we have the resources in order to mitigate both fire-damaged items and smoke-damaged items. We can get your employees back into the office in no time.

When is it Safe for Employees to Return to Work After a Flood?

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

It's natural to want to return to work as soon as possible after your business suffers from a costly incident, such as a "black water" flood. After all, you have this big expense to pay off and you're losing money just by not being at the office. No matter how eager you are, you still have to consider your employees' personal safety. Keep the following safety considerations in mind before you send your employees back to your West El Paso office.

1. Sweep Up Any Physical Debris. The physical damages should be the first task you address during flood cleanup. Strong floodwaters can introduce harmful objects into the office, such as stray nails and glass shards. Make sure to sweep the office floors thoroughly to ensure every hidden danger is taken care of. As a business owner, your employees' personal safety should be your number one priority. Taking the time and effort to thoroughly clean and disinfect your office building following a black waterflood is a non-negotiable task for you. Contact flood remediation experts for assistance during the cleanup process.

2. Clear Out the Flood Water. Both black and gray water floods pose major safety concerns for your employees. Black water is characterized by the presence of harmful biohazards, such as human/animal fecal matter, raw sewage, and dangerous chemicals. You have to make sure you clear out all of the contaminated floodwaters and thoroughly disinfect every exposed surface before you allow your employees to return to the office.

3.Check the Air Quality. It's very possible that the biohazards introduced with the floodwater are now in the air. Make sure to set up fans and other air filtration devices throughout your building to help eliminate harmful agents. As an additional safety measure, you may want to consider keeping these filtration devices running even after your employees come back.

3 Ways to Avoid Cigarette Fires in Your West El Paso Home

8/25/2021 (Permalink)

Cigarettes are a common cause of fire even though these fires are easily preventable. Here are three ways to prevent a cigarette fire.

1. Smoke outside. Most cigarette fires start when a smoker falls asleep. Bedrooms and couches are the most common places for cigarette fires to break out. Keep in mind that the same risks apply to smoking on a screened-in porch or a deck with furniture. It is best to smoke away from the house in an outdoor chair. You may be less likely to get comfortable enough to fall asleep outside with a lit cigarette.

2. Use stable, enclosed ashtrays. An ashtray fire is a common type of cigarette fire. This type of blaze can occur if a pet knocks over an ashtray that contains smoldering butts or if burning butts get blown out of the ashtray onto combustible materials outdoors. Choose an ashtray that is hard to knock over, and that is enclosed.

3. Completely extinguish cigarettes. If you do not put out the burning end of a cigarette, you will greatly increase a fire risk inside or outside of your home. Take an extra moment to make sure that your cigarette is completely extinguished before leaving the area. Some ashtrays feature sand or other materials that can help to ensure that the ends of cigarettes are no longer burning. This is the most important step in preventing fires whether you choose to smoke indoors or outdoors.

These are three simple and effective ways to prevent fires caused by cigarettes in or around your home. If a cigarette fire does break out, and your home sustains damage, contact West El Paso's premier fire damage, experts!

Typical Standby Generator Maintenance

8/20/2021 (Permalink)

Typical Standby Generator Maintenance

Who Is Responsible For Apartment Complex Water Damage?

8/10/2021 (Permalink)

Unfortunately, water damage is a common issue both homeowners and renters can face. The aftermath can be devastating making the property unlivable and permanent damage may occur to personal belongings. When water damage occurs in an apartment, who is responsible for the damage cost?

In general, a landlord is responsible for maintaining the property ensuring that the apartment is livable and functioning up to code. The landlord may refuse repairs, or fail to address them quickly enough – causing further damage such as mold. Failure to maintain or repair these functions may lead to property damage and the landlord is liable due to negligence. Check with the local housing authority for further information.

Know your lease

It’s important to know what your lease states regarding property damage. Most properties have property insurance and will list what type of damage that is covered and what is not. In general, if the damage is minor, the tenant will not be able to cancel the lease agreement. If the terms regarding property damage are not listed in the lease, speak to your landlord about who is responsible in the event when water damage strikes.

Renters Insurance

Accidents happen which is why it is essential to have renters insurance. Most places require you have it before allowing you to move into an apartment. Depending on the plan you select, coverage can vary from damages to the building, personal content and may even cover the cost of lodging while repairs are being completed.

Damage to Property and Personal Belongings

Water damages caused to the building itself such as flooring, walls, and utilities should be covered under the landlord’s property insurance. Personal property damages fall to the responsibility of the party at fault for damages, which can be the tenant. For example, if the tenant leaves a faucet on and falls asleep causing water damage.

How We Can Help

Water damage requires a rapid response in order to minimize loss to both the property itself and belongings inside. SERVPRO of West El Paso technicians are experts at water damage cleanup in apartments and buildings of all sizes no matter the severity of the damage. Have your landlord or property manager call us at (915) 234-2614 to learn more about our water damage clean-up services.

Recover & Reopen Your Business After a Disaster | SERVPRO® of West El Paso

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

Building up your own business is an extremely rewarding thing, but when it comes to the possibility of a natural disaster, the future is never certain. Many businesses are permanently derailed by disasters annually due to the difficult task of recovery—but thankfully, risks can be significantly mitigated by planning in advance for how you will recover.

Safety is always the top concern when it comes to preparing your business for the worst, but once your safety plans are in place, you can begin thinking about the physical recovery process. Handling insurance, restoration, communications, and applying for disaster assistance can all work together to get your doors reopened faster so you can get back to business.

Get Your Doors Reopened Faster After a Disaster Strikes Your Business

Check in with your insurance and restoration providers. There are many things that might be covered on your commercial policy, but because each one differs, it is best to check with your provider to know for sure. Once you do this, it is time for the restoration to begin—contact your commercial restoration provider quickly so they can begin formulating a response for you.

Make customers aware of the recovery plan. It is smart to get in touch with your customers right away after a disaster so they are aware of what to expect. Social media can provide a simple way to reach people quickly, and can give you the chance to promote any ways that customers can support you during the closure, such as buying gift cards or pre-purchasing items online to help your revenue during a difficult time.

See what disaster assistance you qualify for. After an official disaster event is declared, there will be many resources available to business owners such as disaster recovery loans from the Small Business Administration. These loans tend to be easy to qualify for, carry low-interest rates, and can be used for many different expenses that a business owner may incur throughout the recovery process.

If your business has been damaged due to a disaster, we’re here to help. Contact us at any hour to report your damage or to learn more about our commercial restoration services.

Preventing Storm Damage | SERVPRO of West El Paso

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

Rain showers can lead to flooding conditions in El Paso, TX. Follow our tips to help reduce any possible flooding to your home or business.

Watch for Pooling Water

As it rains look for places around your property where water pools, and channel it away from buildings. Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear of debris and they are directing water as intended.

Maintain Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump, check to be sure it is operational before water starts rising. Consider a back-up generator to ensure your pump works when you need it most.

Raise Storage Goods

Try to keep as few items as possible off the floor. Even small floods can cause large amounts of damage to your items.

Shut Your Power

As rising water approaches the level of electrical outlets, you risk having a live current flow through all the water. Cut the power if you can safely do so without standing in water. Otherwise, evacuate and contact an electrician.

Consider Flood Insurance

Homeowner's insurance will not cover floods; so it is recommended to purchase it separately. Flood insurance will provide you the means to respond to a catastrophic flooding event.

Preparation is Key

Prepare in advance with a SERVPRO® Emergency Ready Profile® (ERP). Our convenient mobile app stores all your utility and emergency response information in one place, so you can access this information from your smartphone or computer.

When a flood happens, you need to act fast to dry out any wet items, particularly structural materials like walls and flooring. Call SERVPRO® of West El Paso to extract water and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Spring Cleaning and Fire Safety in Your El Paso Home

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Spring is in full swing and if you haven’t started your spring cleaning, now is the time! Not only will it get your house in tip-top shape, but you can also look for any areas that can cause fire damage in your El Paso home.

Replace batteries in your home.

Batteries can die in items even if you aren't using them often. Start with replacing the batteries in your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and flashlights. Other batteries that may need to be changed are security cameras, alarm systems, and smart locks on your home.

Dryer Vents

Other than routinely cleaning your lint filter out before and after loads, you should also be making sure that the outdoor dryer flaps are not blocked by build-up or animal nests. This can be a DIY project or you can hire a professional.

Check on any extension cords.

Check to make sure that extension cords are not overloaded, frayed, or cracked. Replace where needed and try to move electronics if too many are in one extension.

Propane/charcoal grills should remain outside.

Your propane/charcoal grill should be stored and used outside only. Make sure that the grill is routinely cleaned and someone is always tending to the grill when in use.

Clean outside debris

Make sure to clean up dead leaves and trash from around your house. These items may be dangerous if exposed to heat, and in the event, there is a fire it will exacerbate it.

SERVPRO of West El Paso is here to help with any preventative cleaning needs or fire needs. If emergency services are needed due to a fire or any other disaster give us a call 24 hours a day at (915) 234-2614.

The Different Types of Flood Water We Work With In West El Paso

5/11/2021 (Permalink)

Category 1: Clean water from a broken pipe or rainwater that has not mixed with contaminants. Saving a carpet damaged by Category 1 water is possible if the carpet has been wet for less than 24-48 hours. Otherwise, the water may “degrade” into Category 2. Professionals can restore both padding and carpet through proper sanitation and remediation procedures.

Category 2: Greywater which is contaminated and can cause sickness if swallowed or if it touches the body. This includes overflow from washing machines or dishwashers, toilet overflows with no solid matter, broken aquariums, sump pump failures, etc. With this type of loss, the padding needs to be replaced, but the carpet can be salvaged. Not treating a Category 2 loss within 24-48 hours will turn into a Category 3.

Category 3: Blackwater that’s highly contaminated with pathogens or other harmful agents and materials. Examples include sewage, toilet backflows, flooding from seawater, rivers, streams, and water from hurricanes, storms, or other weather-related events. Cleaning your flooded carpet is nearly impossible if Category 3 water saturated it.

Every water damage situation is different. So, you cannot know for sure if or when your carpet and pad can be salvaged until you have a professional restoration company inspect the carpeting.

Also, the faster you report the disaster, the lower the costs will be. If you’re dealing with a flooded carpet problem, contact us today!

Did You Experience a Fire? Call SERVPRO of West El Paso

4/14/2021 (Permalink)

When it comes to restoring or replacing your home’s contents after a fire, the first 48 hours are extremely crucial. SERVPRO® of West El Paso understands this timeframe is important and will show up to help with fire, smoke, soot, and any contents remediation your home may need.

The restoration process cannot begin until you call us. Our representatives will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Once on the scene, our technicians will inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action. Because so much water is used to put out the fire, we must begin to dry the property with our dehumidifiers and air movers. We then can use our equipment to remove smoke and soot from all areas of the home. We are also able to remove the contents of your home and keep it safe at our facility while the mitigation is in process. To maintain security and protect against further damage, our team will board up any missing windows and place tarps over damaged roofs.

Once the home is free of debris, water, and smoke we can start to clean up and sanitize the property. For items that can be restored, we can remove odor and bring it back to pre-fire condition. After these steps, the restoration process can begin and you can get your home and life back to normal. We will walk through your home to make sure everything is up to your standards and you are completely satisfied.

Why a Dehumidifier Is Great for Your West El Paso Home

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

When cleaning up water damage, commercial-grade dehumidifiers are excellent for sucking excess moisture from the air, helping to dry out the area and prevent further damage. While extraction of the standing water takes first priority, dehumidification prevents a variety of further problems such as improving air quality and reducing mold growth. If you don’t already have a dehumidifier, here are some benefits of why you should get one.

  1. Overly moist air is susceptible to catching a variety of airborne particles, contaminating your air. This could include dust, dead skin cells, and mold spores. Dehumidification reduces the number of particles in the air, making it easier and better for breathing.
  2. Reducing moisture and maintain cleaner air is one of the best ways to prevent mold growth in your home. Mold grows by finding a damp, wet environment and then releases spores into the air which spread throughout your home until they find another surface to grow on. One of the reasons we at SERVPRO of West El Paso dehumidify areas that have been affected by water loss is to reduce the chance of mold growth.
  3. A less humid environment in your home means clothing will dry faster, pieces of bread and cereals will remain fresh longer without getting stale, and you won’t find signs of rust or corrosion on things like computer equipment, electronics, and tools.
  4. A dehumidifier also lowers energy costs because it helps your air conditioner run more efficiently. When the air in your home is more humid, the A/C must do the function of cooling the air and removing moisture, which means it has to work harder. This also causes your A/C to wear out sooner, which means you will need to replace and repair it more often.

Ways To Backup Your Data | SERVPRO of Southeast West El Paso

3/29/2021 (Permalink)

Digital data backup is crucial to protecting your important files. Whether they’re vacation photos, music albums or work documents, you should keep a copy of your files to keep them secure from threats. Not only can your hard drive fail, but disasters like fire, flood or robbery can also cause data loss. If you’re not backing up your digital data already, here are the best methods you can use.

External Drive

Using a USB stick or an external hard drive, you can back up your data with your computer’s integrated backup features (or other third-party programs). For macOS users, there’s Time Machine and for Windows 10 and 8 users, there’s File History.

These features can also back up your data on your internal drive, but it’s safer to use an external one. Also, if you keep your external drive connected all the time, these programs can automatically back up your data on it. Otherwise, connect your drive occasionally and manually perform backups when convenient.

While this method is fast and affordable, it’s not good if your house experiences a disaster like a fire or gets robbed.

Cloud Storage

With the rise of Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, and OneDrive, cloud storage has become a staple in modern backup technology. This method doesn’t require buying external drives or other hardware. Your files are uploaded in “the cloud”, which is a remote, big capacity storage device/server owned by a tech company. Make sure to choose a reputable cloud service, like the ones mentioned above.

As long as you have an Internet connection, cloud storage makes it easy to copy your files on a server from a provider. Cloud services are fast (depending on Internet speed), secure, and easily accessible from your phone or computer.

NAS Device

This is a more complex and expensive backup option as it involves creating your own local server. While you can have NAS devices at home, they are mostly preferred by companies that want control over their own data servers. NAS devices can hold large amounts of data and can be extended with extra hard drives.

If you’re choosing one of these backup methods, make sure to encrypt your backups with strong passwords and keep those passwords safe.

We Handle Storms Like Pros

11/10/2020 (Permalink)

Our SERVPRO® West El Paso Rapid Response Team Can Help You With Storm Damage In Your Property

Even though storm season is wrapping up, a nearby road overflow can cause significant issues in the ground levels of your property. Heavy rainfall results in sewer systems backing up and overflowing with contaminated Black Water. Due to the potentially harmful effects of Black Water, it is essential to hire a professional, qualified technician to help repair and restore your property safely. Indeed, many of your possessions can be salvaged by using professional cleaning equipment promptly.

Where there is Flood Damage in SERVPRO® of West El Paso homes, the likelihood of contaminants being spread around the home is high. In the circumstances, it is not uncommon for our technicians to wear Hazmat suits to protect themselves from pathogens during the cleanup operation. We may also have to remove sections of drywall to clean in and behind walls, floors, and fittings. Left behind debris is not only odorous but have the potential to be harmful if not dealt with thoroughly.

For owners who find themselves in this position, it is only natural to immediately assume the worst, especially where personal possessions are concerned. Here at SERVPRO® of West El Paso we always work with a restore over replace mentality. Unlike other providers, our services are geared toward salvaging as much as possible. We enable our technicians to achieve this by providing them with state-of-the-art cleaning equipment and technology.

We can assess items immediately on site to decide which possessions are salvageable and which need disposal. Generally speaking, porous materials absorb black water making them exceptionally difficult to clean; this could include your carpets or curtains. However, where they are valuable fabrics, we can send them to a specialized facility for mechanical cleaning using Esporta washing machines. These equipment are expensive because they are advanced. However, SERVPRO® of West El Paso provides technicians with everything they need to restore items rather than replace them.

Floods are considerable emergencies which is why SERVPRO® of West El Paso training involves a rapid-response unit as well as a 24-hour emergency call line. Our skilled specialists are local to the area and can reach you fast to help mitigate loss and reduce the risk of permanent damage.

In an emergency, contact SERVPRO® West El Paso at (915) 234-2614 for immediate assistance.

How to Safely Return to the Office

11/6/2020 (Permalink)

Although many businesses have decided to keep the work from home policy enforced, other companies have decided to return to the office. If you want your small or large business to return to the office, check out or tips to help workers re-integrate into office life.

Have a Plan on When to Go Back

Your first step should be to make a plan. Have a set date of when the office will reopen so you can be sure your timeline will work with that date. Let each employee know of the date and work with them if that date is not feasible. Many people now have extra responsibilities on their hands with schools and other facilities being closed. Others who may be immunocompromised may not feel comfortable working in an office setting. It is important to listen to your employees concerns.

Letting Employees Readjust

It has been 8 months since the COVID-19 pandemic has begun. It is expected that most employees will have a lag in their readjustment. Be there for your employees and give them all the support they need during these unprecedent times.

Have a Cleaning Plan

This is the most important part of the COVID-19 reintegration plan. When employees know their health is being taken care of, they are more likely to come into the office, as well as feel comfortable doing so. SERVPRO of West El Paso offers comprehensive COVID-19 cleaning for any sized space. We offer both proactive cleanings as well as positive case cleanings. SERVPRO of West El Paso uses CDC recommended products and cleaning guidelines and SERVPRO technicians have been using hospital-grade disinfectant to sanitize workspaces during this time.

As a locally owned business ourselves, SERVPRO of West El Paso wants other organizations to stay healthy and feel comfortable going in for their daily duties. Give us a call and we can help you get back into your office safely!

Does Your House Need a Breathing Treatment?

11/5/2020 (Permalink)

Owning a home is a wonderful experience that comes with huge responsibilities. The list of what needs to be checked is a lengthy one that can honestly seem overwhelming at times – so let us handle a few of them for you! Keeping your house properly maintained ensures you will have a place you love to call home for years.

One area that many homeowners neglect is properly maintaining the air ducts. If you think about what the air ducts do for your home, it is very similar to what lungs do for your body. With that in mind, the industry standard for residential properties is to have the air ducts cleaned every two - five years. This process improves indoor air quality by moving debris within the duct work. It will increase the lifespan of your AC system and make it more efficient.

You may be thinking, “What could they possibly find in these units?” Well I am glad you asked!

We have removed things as crazy as a toy car, to the more serious discoveries of mold that people never knew existed. Fortunately, not only do we remove debris, we also treat it with an antimicrobial agent to eliminate mold and bacteria. This is a preventive measure that absolutely helps keep your system free of nasty airborne agents.

Do the smart thing and let us keep your house lungs clean. We will ensure your duct work, air handler and system are free of old toy cars and mold. We are equipped to handle any size unit whether you have a residential home that needs care or a building as large as a hospital. If we do find damaged duct-work or maybe the air duct was never connected, we can complete minor repairs such as reattaching them to the vent.

Your Portable Induction Cooktop Can Cause a Fire in Your West El Paso Home

11/4/2020 (Permalink)

Black and Silver induction burner SERVPRO is here to help with any type of fire damage

You may be tempted to buy a portable induction cooktop if the stovetop in your apartment doesn't have enough burners, but it is important never to leave these devices unattended as they get extremely hot and can cause fire damage. While these tools may be useful, any device meant for cooking can cause a fire in your home if they are not carefully observed. However, accidents can happen, even if you keep safety in mind, and it is reassuring to know that qualified help is close by when these situations get out of hand.

It is essential to call for help to come to your home in El Paso to deal with the fire damage as swiftly as possible. When fire damage is left for long periods of time without remediation, it only allows it to become more permanent. Melted plastics on your kitchen counter, adhered soot, and the ash left behind only grow harder to clean up as they cool. Plastic containers, which have been exposed to soot, change color and become more yellow just moments after the soot adheres to their surfaces. Getting a restoration team to your home as quickly as you can is the best way to ensure that a lot of the damage that occurred in your home is reversible.

SERVPRO can send a team of specialists to your home to inspect the damage. Different materials melt at different temperatures, and only trained professionals can determine the best method to remediate them successfully. SERVPRO techs can use trade tools to tackle the different kinds of damage that the fire left in your home. For example, a hydroxyl generator can be used to neutralize odors. Lubricative cleaners can be used to remove soot stains from the surfaces of your kitchen equipment. SERVPRO strives to find a solution to every type of damage that your home sustains during the fire.

If your home should suffer from fire damage, do not hesitate or try to consider your options. The sooner you dial 915.234.2614 to contact SERVPRO of West El Paso, the quicker we can get to your home to remediate the damage.

SERVPRO Can Help Speed the Process of Fire Damage Recovery in Your West El Paso Home

Blue pot on gas stove with a white cloth that caught fire Restoring Normalcy after Fire Damage in Metairie

Even a small fire can leave your property looking like a warzone with partially burnt items strewn all over, and smoke residues or other forms of soiling on different surfaces. Luckily most fires are put out before gutting the entire structure. However, this leads to significant cleanup and restoration work before normalcy returns.

Most homeowners dealing with fire damage in West El Paso are first timers, so they have very little information on what to do. It is not unusual to think that every blackened item or surface needs to be thrown out after the incident. Our SERVPRO team includes a project manager who oversees the entire process. Apart from managing the rest of the crew, the project manager advises the property owner on crucial steps to take such as boarding up the property to present additional damages and also liaises with the insurance adjuster to ensure every aspect of the damage is fixed “Like it never even happened.”

Salvaging some materials and contents of the house can help reduce the total restoration cost. Proper inspection of items and using advanced restoration techniques help in the salvage process. Our SERVPRO team separates items into groups of salvageable, unsalvageable and questionable items. We clean salvageable items on site and move the questionable ones offsite for in-depth inspection and cleaning. We use electronic CCIS, Content Claim Inventory Service, which helps keep better track on contents and return them to their original location in the house after restoration.

Water-related problems such as mold infestation can develop soon after a fire incident because of the water used to put out the fire and in the cleanup processes. Drying off excess moisture helps prevent these problems. Our SERVPRO technicians use different moisture detection tools to determine which drying processes are necessary. Thermo-hygrometers help establish the levels of relative humidity in affected and unaffected areas. We also use moisture sensors to probe materials and determine the level of moisture they hold. We then use air movers and dehumidifiers to dry them to preloss state.

In case of fire damage, call SERVPRO of West El Paso  to help restore normalcy. You can reach us at (504) 496-0193 any time.

Deep cleaning

Sometimes you need a bit more than the everyday cleaning job your staff does. Just like we do deep cleaning a couple times a year in our homes, it is essential to have this done in our restaurants as well. Restaurants enjoy a thorough cleaning of the floors, drapes, blinds, carpeting, and upholstery. Food smells can become trapped in fabrics leaving a sour or greasy smell. SERVPRO of West El Paso has specialty cleaning services to ensure your restaurant gets deep cleaned.

Deodorization

Not only does your Metairie restaurant need a deep cleaning, but it needs an odor removal process using deodorization. Our staff is trained to discover what is causing the odors. This is an important first step in eliminating the odors. Once our staff knows where the smell is emanating from, then we can use the proper formula to remove it. We have several different deodorizing formulas created to get to the source of the bad smells. Odor removal is not just about hiding or covering up offending smells, but it’s essential to go to the root of the problem and neutralize it.

Inspect for mold

Mold is one thing that not only leaves a musty odor, but it has a negative impact on your health. That’s why it’s so important to determine if mold is the culprit and, if so, to begin action right away to combat it. We have tools and equipment that help us determine if there is a mold problem. It doesn’t take much for mold to develop and then spread. If you suspect mold, we will discover the source and work to isolate, then eliminate it.

At SERVPRO of West El Paso, we make cleaning and restoration our expertise. We train and educate our staff to combat stinky smells wherever they may be. If you have a restaurant that does not smell too sweet, contact us today!

Why You Need to Address Your West El Paso Home's Water Damage Right Away

10/28/2020 (Permalink)

Water Damage is extremely serious and needs to be addressed immediately in your Metairie home. Within minutes, water can spread through your property and saturate everything. This includes walls, floors, upholstery, books, documents, and pictures.

Within 1 to 24 hours your drywall will begin to swell and break down, a musty odor will appear, and metal surfaces will tarnish. Between 48 hours to 1 week, mold will grow and spread, paint will blister, metal will corrode, and doors will begin to warp. After one week the damage will be so serious that the cost and time to restore your home will be astronomical, and the structural safety of the home will pose risks to those who live there.

Because water damage is not uncommon in the West El Paso area it is important to familiarize yourself with the below steps on how to mitigate water damage in your home.

  1. Turn off the electricity to prevent electrical problems.
  2. Address the source of the water and stop it from flooding your home.
  3. Remove standing water with specialized pumps or vacuums, but you can also do this manually.
  4. Dry out the remaining water with fans and dehumidifiers to speed the drying process.
  5. Sanitize affected items based on what type of water it came into contact with.
  6. Restore items that can be salvaged and replace damaged items to prevent contamination and mold growth.

If the damage is too large for you to handle on your own, know that your local SERVPRO® of West El Paso is available 24/7 to restore your home, personal belongings, and give you back your peace of mind.

How To Flush Your Hot Water Heater Like a (SERV) Pro!

10/26/2020 (Permalink)

Flushing the water heater in your West El Paso home might be something you have never thought of. But like most household appliances, it too can accumulate mineral deposits and sediments that can stop your heater from running efficiently. It is recommended to flush your water heater once a year to ensure debris does not corrode your heater and to maintain optimal hot water temperature.

There are two types of water heaters: gas and electric. The main difference is whether you will be turning off the gas or electricity supply before you begin flushing. After turning off the power source, you must turn off your heater’s supply of water by shutting off the cold water valve. It is best to wait overnight so you can be sure the water isn’t hot, but if you can’t wait then use caution when flushing.

The next step is to turn on the hot water elsewhere in the home, such as a sink or tub. This will prevent a vacuum from forming as the tank drains. Now you are ready to start draining your heater.

You can control where the water goes by connecting a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of your heater. Place the hose in a bucket or where you can safely dispose of the water. Open the pressure relief valve near the top of your water heater and watch the water drain from your heater. Once it is empty, reopen the cold water valve at the top of your tank and then shut it off again to get any lasting sediments that did not get flushed from the first round.

After the water starts to run clear and is sediment-free, you should close the drain valve and turn the water supply line back on. The water from the sink or tub you have running should start to smoothly exit the faucet, and that is how you know the air has been pushed out. You can turn the gas or electric back on to let the water heater begin to heat back up.

If you are experiencing problems with your water pressure, or temperature in your tank you should contact a professional in the West El Paso area. Hot water heaters are extremely important to keep your home functioning. Take care of it, and it can save you time and money in the future!

Candle Alternatives That Are Just as Great as the Real Thing!

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

Candles are a great way to light up, decorate, and make your home smell like fresh leaves, a beach vacation, or sitting by the campfire. However, According to the NFPA, from 2014-2018, there were an estimated 7,610 house fires that were started by candles per year that caused an annual average of 81 deaths, 677 injuries, and $278 million in property damage. Save your Metairie home, and use these candle alternatives instead!

Flame-less candles

For those who just want the aesthetic of a candle and no scent, flame-less candles are a great option! They are typically battery-operated and give the same flame-like feature as real candles.

Wax warmer

Wax warmers are a great alternative because you can get that amazing scent that comes from real candles without the hazard. Warmers are typically either battery or outlet operated to melt the wax.

Diffuser

Calling all of our essential oil fans, this one is for you! With hundreds of combinations to try, diffusers are a great option for the whole house.

Fairy lights

Although they have no scent, fairy lights are a great way to light up and make a room feel cozy! Most fairy lights also come in with a standard plug or are battery operated.

Stick diffusers

The most low maintenance option is a stick diffuser. Put your scent in the vase and let the sticks do the work.

Room spray

Another great option with endless scents is a room spray. You can buy pre-made ones, or make your own for that signature scent for your home!

If you still plan to opt for a candle, be sure to trim the wick before each use to minimize sparking, place the candle where it can’t fall or be knocked over, and always blow out the candle anytime you leave the room or plan to leave the home.

Using Technology During a Storm

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

Technology can cause stress and sometimes is more of a burden than helpful. However, in the case of emergencies such as natural disasters, it can be extremely helpful for keeping you updated and letting friends and family know where you are. You more than likely already have the technology in your home to keep you and your family safe during a disaster, so follow these tips to use it effectively!

Remember, always be sure to keep portable charges ready in your emergency kit so you can always access your technology when you need it most.

Social Media for News

Using social media is a great way to get up-to-date news straight to your smartphone. Almost all local and national government has social media pages that are updated regularly, especially during a natural disaster.

Mark Yourself Safe

Another way to use social media is to mark yourself safe. Facebook offers a feature called Safety Check that allows you to mark yourself safe if you are in the area of a dangerous situation. Marking yourself safe lets friends and family know that although you are in the area of disaster, you are safe. The Red Cross offers a similar feature called Safe & Well which is both an app and website where you can mark yourself as safe for friends and family.

Use Online Storage

Services like Google Drive and DropBox are a great way to store personal information online in a safe manner. Keeping copies of identification cards, passports, insurance policies, medical records, and pet information is important if your documents get lost in a disaster or you forget them when you are evacuating. You can also access DropBox and Google drive on any computer or phone, just make sure you remember your password!

Commercial Carpet Cleaning | SERVPRO of West El Paso

10/15/2020 (Permalink)

To reduce that percentage, a good rule of thumb to maintain your carpet’s original state is to get it professionally cleaned once a year. Protect your businesses investment by having it cleaned by SERVPRO of West El Paso.

Because each carpet can slightly vary, we offer a number of options to keep your carpet and upholstery brand new. Here is our range of specialized cleaning methods:

  • Bonnet Cleaning: A less aggressive method for short piled carpets.
  • Hot Water Extraction: A deeper cleaning method for all carpet types.
  • Deluxe Precondition and Rinse: Helps restore deeply soiled areas.
  • Showcase Premier Cleaning: The most thorough cleaning method in the industry.
  • Dry Cleaning: When color-fastness is an issue.

For a cleaning backed by state-of-the-art equipment, over 40 years of experience, and Professionals trained to the highest standards, call SERVPRO of West El Paso today to schedule an appointment.

After a Fire, Call SERVPRO® of West El Paso

10/14/2020 (Permalink)

Why a Restoration-Focused Approach Matters | SERVPRO® of West El Paso

10/13/2020 (Permalink)

Experiencing an event that causes damage to your home, such as a fire or severe storm, can be a quite frightening thing to endure. The emotional trauma associated with these events is serious and can impact your family severely and for a long period of time. While working to recover while dealing with these emotional impacts is not an easy process, but it will be extremely helpful to your healing.

When you work with us, you can not only be certain we will respond quickly, but you can also be sure that we will restore everything we are able to and only suggest replacement as a last resort.

Why We Focus on Restoration Instead of Replacement of Items

We can help you save money on your insurance. Because of homeowners policies, many types of household damage will be covered if you file a claim—but these claims can be expensive. Objects such as family photos and heirlooms could never be replaced, which is why we equip ourselves with the most advanced restoration technology possible to salvage these items whenever we can.

We make sure your home feels like home again. Having to be away from your home due to damage is disheartening, but when you return home, there is nothing better. Signs of a Water Damaged Ceiling

10/12/2020 (Permalink)

A water damaged ceiling is unsightly and dangerous. Before you can repair the ceiling you must locate the issue that is causing the water damage first. If you repair the ceiling without fixing any underlying issues you are asking for a repeat situation. If you plan to locate the source of the problem yourself, be sure to shut off the electricity and water flow in your home.

Telltale Signs of Water Damage

“Sweat” stains -

If it looks like there is a darker shade of your paint on your ceiling, you most likely have the start of a water leak. This causes a sweat-like appearance on your ceiling and you should take action before it gets worse.

Water stains -

Usually brown in color, water stains mean there is a leak or there was a leak. Regardless of how big or small, the water stain is, the leak should be located and stopped. Water stains will usually happen from a leaky roof, overflowing of sinks, tubs, and toilets on the second floor, and cracked pipes.

Ceiling Bubbles -

If you notice your ceiling swelling or bubbling, there is a buildup of moisture in the drywall. If this is not taken care of the ceiling can collapse, causing a dangerous and messy situation. It may seem like a good idea to poke the bubble, but there can be more water than expected, so it is best to let the professionals take care of it.

Mold Growth:

If you see mold, you can be sure you have water damage, which is why it must be addressed immediately. Mold is extremely dangerous and within 48 hours it can grow and spread, to other parts of the home.

While you wait for SERVPRO of West El Paso to arrive to mitigate and restore your water damaged home, you can read our process for mitigation here.

How to Decide Who to Give Your Business to for Storm Restoration

Cooking Safety with SERVPRO® of West El Paso

8/31/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® of West El Paso wants to share our top cooking tips to prevent household fires and injury. Cooking can be a way to come together as a family, but did you know most house fires are caused in the kitchen from the stovetop?

Stovetop fires are normally caused when food is left unattended. Always be sure to pay attention to what you are cooking, especially if cooking with oil or at high temperatures. Be sure to remove food packaging, dish towels, paper towels, wooden utensils, and oven mitts away from the stovetop so these items don’t get burned or catch onto an open flame.

Make sure all appliances are in working order and unplugged when not in use. Crumb trays should be emptied, and fallen food should be cleaned from the oven and microwave when cooled. Be sure to never use metal in the microwave as it can easily spark and cause a fire.

When cooking, it is best to wear tight-fitting clothing and tie long hair back. Baggy clothes, long hair, and dangling sleeves can easily catch the hot burner or open flame. If your clothes or hair catches on fire, be sure to STOP - DROP -  and ROLL to smother the flame. It is also best to keep your cooking zone “child-free” so children do not touch hot appliances, or get burned by hot liquids or flames.

How to Clean Mold From Your West El Paso Washing Machine

8/27/2020 (Permalink)

Mold grows in warm and wet places, which makes your washing machine a perfect breeding ground. Just because you are washing your clothes does not mean the washing machine itself is getting clean. Mold thrives on residual detergent and wetness left behind in the washing machine. Whether you have a front or top-loading washing machine, below we have outlined how to prevent and remove mold in your West El Paso home’s machine.

Preventing Mold

Preventing mold in your washing machine is quite simple. Every single time you finish doing your load(s), leave the top lid or front door open, and the detergent drawer open to let the inside of the washer dry naturally. Wiping down the gasket of your washer will also help prevent mold as this spot has a harder time drying naturally.

Another way to prevent mold is to ditch the traditional fabric softer and use vinegar instead. Fabric softer has many additives that mold love and your clothes will still smell just as great using vinegar. Once the clothes have finished, remove them from the drum to prevent extra moisture.

Cleaning your Machine

Top Loading

  1. Fill the machine with hot water.
  2. Add 1 cup of store-bought mold remover or create your own.
  3. Allow it to sit for one hour.
  4. Allow the cycle to complete normally.
  5. Keep the lid open to allow it to finish drying or wipe dry.

Front Loading

  1. Spray the inside with a store-bought or a homemade mold solution and let it dry.
  2. Add 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the wash drum.
  3. Run a wash cycle using the hottest water setting to get rid of mold, mildew, and mineral deposits.
  4. When done, spray the entire area with mold solution and wipe.
  5. Keep the door open to allow it to finish drying.

Front Loading Machine’s Gasket

  1. Make sure the washer is turned off and empty.
  2. Using a damp rag, remove are any foreign substances on or in the gasket.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda inside the gasket and add vinegar. When bubbling subsides, scrub the gasket.
  4. Wipe down the gasket with a damp, clean rag, and dry it.
  5. (OPTIONAL) - Spray with a mold solution to kill any lingering mold and allow to air dry.

Detergent Drawer

  1. Remove the drawer.
  2. Soak the drawer in hot water and vinegar for 30 minutes and then scrub any remaining debris.
  3. Dry drawer and spray with mold solution to catch any extra mold, and allow to air dry.

These tips should help you curb mold in your washing machine, which in excess can lead to health problems. Not only can washing machines cause mold, but they can also flood. Even while taking precautions damage can occur at any time. If you suspect you have a mold or water damage problem know that SERVPRO? of West El Paso is ready to come out and rectify the problem at hand.

Preventing Sewage Backup in Your West El Paso Home

8/21/2020 (Permalink)

Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment are necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.

Why sewer backup can happen:

There a few reasons why sewer backup can happen, but the most common reasons are:

  • Trees - Roots can grow into pipes, create holes or cracks in them, and wrap around sewer lines. Even if you don't personally have a tree on your property, your neighbor’s tree may be the suspect in your backup.
  • Heavy rain - Excessive water can overwork pumps, and easily cause a sewage backup.
  • Old or broken lines - Older homes are not uncommon and many older homes were built using cast iron and clay piping that breaks down over time and consequently causes sewer problems.
  • Foreign objects - Avoid putting anything in your toilet or garbage disposal that can cause a backup. This can include wipes, cooking grease, oils that harden at room temperature, food scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, old contact lenses, rocks, and hair.

Types of water associated with sewage backup:

  • "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, "clean water" can quickly degrade into "gray" or "black" water depending on time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

  • "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for "gray water" may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • "Black Water"

This water can cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources of "black water" could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Call us 24/7 at (915) 585-3434

Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible. At SERVPRO® of West El Paso our trained specialists will safely restore your home or business after a sewage backup.

COVID-19 Proofing Your West El Paso Business

8/20/2020 (Permalink)

Not every business gets the luxury of working from home during the COVID-19 Pandemic, especially if your business thrives on customers. Routine cleaning of your business is essential to limiting guests, and employees to exposure. Follow these tips to sanitize your space!

Start by educating workers, and developing policies for worker protection. This can include enforcing masks, and having a policy if workers start to feel ill. When cleaning your establishment, wear disposable gloves and start with plain soap and water and then use a disinfectant. Soap and water will reduce the number of germs and following with disinfectant will kill germs. Make sure to focus on high touch surfaces. These include but are not limited to:

  • Tables
  • Doorknobs
  • Light switches
  • Countertops
  • Handles
  • Desks
  • Phones
  • Keyboards
  • Toilets
  • Faucets
  • Sinks

If an employee or customer has tested positive for COVID-19 it is best to let the professionals take care of the sanitizing. SERVPRO® of West El Paso offers a defensive pathogen cleaning program, that goes way beyond standard janitorial cleaning practices. We will tailor the program based on the need of your facility and use an EPA- Approved Hospital-Grade solution to decontaminate. Once completed you can be sure your business is Certified: SERVPRO® Cleaned. You will get a Certified: SERVPRO® Cleaned shield to place in your front window to let employees and customers know your business is committed to keeping everyone safe and comfortable.

If you are interested in our commercial cleaning services or want to learn more about our CDC complement Certified: SERVPRO® Cleaned program, contact us!

Better Landscaping Means Less Flooding for your West El Paso Home

8/18/2020 (Permalink)

With the unpredictable weather in Texas, by the time lunch rolls around after you have left for the day, your West El Paso home can be flooded in a moment’s notice. Switching up the landscaping outside of your home can help reduce flooding outside of your home that could potentially cause indoor flooding. Below are four tips to help plan ahead if a neighbor’s pool floods into your yard or there is a storm surge.

  1. Add Heavier Mulch - Lighter mulch can easily be picked up by water and clog your drains causing a backup of water. Heavier mulch can absorb more water as well as stay in place. Don’t forget to place mulch six inches from the siding of your home so it does not rot your home’s exterior.
  2. Grow a Garden - Planting native plants and plants with high moisture tolerance will help prevent soil erosion and allow water to drain better.
  3. Grade your Yard - Sloping the ground around your home will allow water to flow away from your home’s foundation.
  4. Use Rain Barrels - Rain barrels collect rainwater from downspouts to redirect moisture away from your home. SERVPRO® of West El Paso Tip - use the collected water for both indoor and outdoor plants, or make a birdbath!

After taking measures to help reduce flooding in your yard always double-check your work. Excessive rain or dry spells can cause your landscaping to naturally change and consequently reverting your work. After extreme weather check to see how your drainage methods are doing and adjust accordingly. In the event your home does flood, SERVPRO® of West El Paso is available 24/7 to help minimize damage and salvage the contents of your home.

Disabilities and Disasters for West El Paso Residents

8/18/2020 (Permalink)

Many storm surges, earthquakes, fires, and other disasters can happen at a moment’s notice. Keeping your family safe during stressful disasters is a priority and every family should have a plan in place. Mobility, hearing, learning, or seeing disabilities can cause certain families to create extra precautions. Families, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers can all benefit from the below tips on how to stay safe during a West El Paso storm.

Stay Informed

Identifying common disasters in your area and learning how medical, physical, and cognitive needs may affect you or your family member’s ability to respond to each is the first step to disaster preparedness. Take time to learn about your community’s plans for dealing with disasters and sign up for warning and alerts to remain notified at all times.

Preparing

The main factors you or your family should be aware of is who you can count on, where you can go, and what to bring. By creating a personal network of people who are able to help you during a disaster and ways to contact them if communication becomes disrupted can put you at ease.

If evacuation is needed be sure there is a safe space you can go to, and how you can get there if you need specialized transportation. By putting all prescriptions and important documents in an easily accessible place makes grabbing and going more efficient in case of an evacuation. If you have medical equipment make sure where you plan to go you can bring the equipment with you. If not, where can you keep this equipment in the interim so it does not get damaged?

Besides your prescriptions, documents, and equipment, other items to keep in your emergency kit can be:

  • Flashlight
  • Radio
  • Water
  • First aid kit
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Cash
  • Batteries

If you have a service animal make a separate kit for them including:

  • Minimum 72-hour supply of bottled water and pet food
  • Portable water and food bowls
  • Paper towels
  • Medications and veterinarian info
  • Medical records
  • Leash and collar
  • Blanket and toy
  • Plastic bags
  • Bandages
  • Up-to-date ID tag and recent photo
  • Copy of the pet’s license

Last but not least, practice your emergency plan. Make sure you know exactly what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency. As always, SERVPRO® of West El Paso is here to assist with any emergency needs in your home 24/7/365.

Take Shelter if a Summer Storm Catches You Off-Guard | SERVPRO® of West El Paso

7/16/2020 (Permalink)

lighting striking hillside during storm at night Have you been affected by a storm event? SERVPRO of West El Paso is available 24/7 and ready to assist you with any storm damage.

Enjoying a beautiful summer day outside is a great way to spend an afternoon, but it is important that you are always aware of the dangers that a thunderstorm can lead to. While that may be the furthest thing from your mind on a clear day, storms can feed off of the heat and humidity synonymous with summer, popping up suddenly and causing danger.

These tips can help you stay safe even if a storm catches you off-guard.

Stay Safe Even if a Storm Catches You Off-Guard

Know your options for shelter. When a storm is heading your way and you are safely at home or in another secure location, you can wait out the danger in an ideal way. However, not every situation will work out this way, so it is important to know how to safely take shelter in your vehicle as well, just in case.

Practice electrical safety. There is always a possibility that lightning will strike the ground if thunder is in the area. Even if you are in a building, lightning can pose risks due to power surges, which ruin electronics and can cause sparks. The best thing to do is unplug everything that is nearby if you know a storm is coming—but if not, installing surge protectors at home and at the office is a good permanent solution.

Avoid direct contact with concrete. It is commonly assumed that a concrete structure will be your best bet for a storm shelter, but it is important to take precautions even then. Concrete will often be reinforced with metal materials, making it sturdy yet hazardous if lightning strikes. If you are sheltering in a concrete building, avoid directly touching floors or walls so you do not receive any electrical charge.

Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes. If you have been interrupted by a storm as you go about your day, you will understandably want to get back to what you were doing as quickly as possible—but because of how far lightning has been known to travel from storm clouds, it is recommended that you put a pause on all outdoor activities for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last clap of thunder.

If your home sustains damage due to a storm, you can count on us to help. Contact us at any hour to learn more about our storm restoration process.

Planning Out Regular Workplace Fire Safety Drills | SERVPRO® of West El Paso

7/16/2020 (Permalink)

red fire alarm hanging on gray concrete wall If your business experiences any fire damage, you can count on us. SERVPRO of West El Paso specializes in commercial fire restoration.

Making educated decisions regarding planning for the future of your business is something that every owner aims for, so you should be sure to consider all possible scenarios. A fire in the workplace can be a huge safety concern if your employees are unprepared, and it can also entirely derail your plans for the future of your business.

To mitigate your overall fire risk, we recommend starting with the safety aspects as you get your fire preparedness plan together. Making sure you have educated staff on fire safety procedures and scheduling fire safety drills often for practice is the best way to make sure everyone stays safe in a real fire scenario.

Starting With Safety for Fire Preparedness

Consult with your local fire officials. As you start planning for fire safety measures, you should certainly make use of all the resources available to you, both online and in your own backyard. You can generally schedule a visit from the local fire marshal to give your building a personalized assessment and counsel you on the best exit routes for your setup.

Communicate and mark fire evacuation routes. After you have determined what the best exit routes are, make sure you hang clear signs and markers to indicate them and brief staff regarding the drill that is upcoming. A drill will go much more smoothly if everyone is prepared for it, as they can mentally rehearse what actions to take ahead of time in order to move to safety.

Have fire drills frequently. While taking time out of everyone’s day to host a fire drill may feel like an unnecessary interruption, remember that safety in the workplace is the most important thing. You do not have to have drills weekly or monthly, but it is recommended you do them at least every few months and after any hiring sprees so everyone is reminded of what to do.

Run different fire scenarios. There are many variances in how fires start and how they spread, so adding variances to your fire drills is highly recommended. Different exits may become blocked in a real scenario, so do the same during your drills so staff can get used to making decisions quickly in a high-stress scenario.

If your business has experienced fire damage, you can count on us. We specialize in commercial fire restoration and will be here for you at any hour—contact us today.

Make Sure You Are Prepared for the Aftermath of a Fire | SERVPRO® of West El Paso

6/16/2020 (Permalink)

woman with hands covering face upset with burnt house in background If your home is damaged in a house fire, SERVPRO of Southeast West El Paso is here to help. Contact us for any fire restoration needs.

Making sure that you are prepared for a fire (and its aftermath) is a great way to gain peace of mind and keep your household safer. First, you should prioritize a plan for evacuating to safety in case a fire breaks out.

After this is settled, move on to planning for the aftermath of a house fire—assessing the damage, filing an insurance claim and getting a restoration company are all much easier when you know exactly what to expect from the process.

Planning for the Aftermath of a House Fire

Prepare yourself for what to expect. There is no way to predict the damage your home will contain after a fire, but knowing general fire damage patterns can help you prepare. You will generally see spots of charring around where the flames broke out and anywhere they traveled to, but it is also important to note that smoke and soot can travel much farther throughout the home.

Wait to enter your home. Always listen to officials regarding when it is safe to re-enter your home. Ceiling supports, walls and floors can all be damaged by fires and cause structural concerns, so going back in prematurely can cause unnecessary damage both to you and to your home.

Contact your insurance company. Starting the claims process quickly is recommended, and your insurance company will work with you on what this looks like. Every claims process is different based on your provider, so conferring with them directly will help you know what to expect.

Document the damages. Having thorough documentation of the damages is a great way to stay organized and on top of everything as you work to recover. A list is a helpful way to itemize your belongings, and pictures of the damages can come in handy both for you and for your insurance claim.

While storms happen quite frequently across the globe, the dangers they can cause is something we should always be aware of. Storms that carry an electrical charge (characterized by thunder and lightning) can bring severe damages to areas in their pathway.

It is important that you are prepared ahead of time for severe storms by researching the definition of weather notices, obtaining emergency equipment and getting a reliable source of weather information to make sure you are always informed and as prepared as possible.

Research the Definition of Weather Notices

Paying attention to your local weather notices is always a good idea for staying informed, but when it comes to the alerts issued regarding severe weather, you should be certain you know what they mean. There is a difference between a watch and a warning, and reacting properly to each is a key part of staying safe. Watches mean to stay alert and tuned in, as the conditions are favorable for a storm to develop. When a warning is issued, you should seek cover immediately as there is a storm on the ground that is actively impacting the area.

Obtain Emergency Equipment

It is always a good idea to make sure you have emergency equipment in your home, especially if you may find yourself in the path of severe weather. Flashlights, extra power sources, nonperishable food and plenty of water are all good things to keep, in addition to a first-aid kit. These should be stored wherever your home’s safest area is—generally a spot away from windows with few external walls.

Get a Reliable Source of Weather Information

For most of us, we depend on our cell phones to keep us informed about nearly everything happening, but during a severe weather event, you should make sure you have another way to receive information. Cell phone reception can be knocked out, as can power, making phones less than reliable when it comes to getting pertinent updates. Consider keeping a weather radio in your emergency kit so you can always be informed.

If your home has been impacted by storm damage, we are here for you. You can contact us 247 to get a quick response to your home’s damages.
